Did You know?
- An average of 35,000 workers are displaced a month. Many become
disgruntled and file discrimination or harassment suits. In December
1997, a sexual harassment suit was settled in Hawaii for $40,000.
Another recent case in California settled for $3.5 million.
- The Hawaii Department of Labor receives 50 workplace complaint
calls a day. Of these calls, approximately ten have legitimate
reasons to file complaints.
- The Hawaii Civil Rights Commission receives approximately 350
calls per month from people saying their civil rights have been
violated. Seventy-five percent of these calls were complaints
about their employer. During 1997, 629 charges of discrimination
were filed. Some of the reasons for complaints included sexual
harassment, problems with communication, firing, equal employment
opportunities, and mistreatment, which lead to some settlements
of over $50,000.
- State and Federal labor laws require ten mandatory postings
i.e.: Minimum Wage Law etc.. Failure to post can result in severe
fines and penalties.
- Wording on your employee handbook can leave you open for a
lawsuit.
