Insurance
Shipping your car to Hawaii? Once your car arrives you will need
to purchase No-Fault Insurance, in compliance with Hawaii's law.
We have put together information about shipping and registering
a vehicle in Hawaii. Have more questions? E-mail or call us at toll-free
800-426-0114.
No-Fault Insurance
No vehicle may be driven on Hawaii roads without Hawaii No-Fault
Insurance.
You must carry proof of insurance in your vehicle at all times.
If you are stopped and do not have proof of insurance, you could
face a heavy fine, imprisonment and/or suspension of your driver's
license. If your current insurance carrier is not licensed to operate
in Hawaii, you must select a new insurance company.
Vehicle Shipment
The federal government authorizes and pays for the shipment of one
privately owned vehicle (POV) per service member. The arrival day
and time of your vehicle in Hawaii depends upon the mainland location
from which your vehicle was shipped. We recommend that you check
with your Household Goods Officer for more information. Here are
some helpful reminders for shipping your vehicle:
- Have your orders and vehicle registration with YOU... not in the
vehicle.
- You must have permission from the lienholder to transport
the vehicle to Hawaii if you are not the vehicle owner.
- Remove
all personal belongings and valuables including CB radios and tapedecks
not factory installed.
- Carry your shipping papers with YOU. Do
not pack them with your household goods.
- Leave as little gas
in the tank as possible when delivering your vehicle for shipment
but enough to get you to a gas station from the dock.
- Due to
the high humidity and salty air of Hawaii, it is suggested that
you have your vehicle undercoated and waxed before shipping.
Vehicle Pick Up
Call POV Receiving at 848-8383 for information and directions for
the Sealand or Matson terminals. When you pick up your car, be sure
to carefully inspect your vehicle for damage. Be sure to document
any damage to your vehicle. Next, you will sign for the vehicle and
date the Bill of Lading. You have 10 working days to get your POV
inspected and registered in Hawaii.
Registering Your Vehicle
All vehicles, within 72 hours of arrival, must be registered on base
with the Pass and Registration Desk. You must present your military
identification, driver's license, vehicle registration, current safety
inspection certificate and proof of insurance when registering your
vehicle. If you have a motorcycle, you will need to bring your motorcycle
safety card.
Within 10 days of picking up your vehicle from the shipping company,
you must register your vehicle with the Hawaii Department of Motor
Vehicles (DMV) at any Satellite City Hall. For more information, contact
Satellite City Hall's 24-hour recording at (808) 532-7700. Many of
your questions can be answered by the recorded message.
Vehicle Safety Inspection
Every car in Hawaii must pass a vehicle safety inspection. It is best
to check with co-workers for their recommendations on shops that offer
safety inspections. You also can check with the post/base service
stations, some hobby shops, community service stations and repair
shops.
A safety inspection costs approximately $14.50 plus tax (there is
an additional charge for a window tint inspection). You must show
the inspector your Vehicle Registration and Vehicle Insurance Card.
If the inspector finds a defect that you don't want to correct immediately,
you will have 10 working days to correct the defect. The vehicle must
be returned to the same station for re-inspection at no additional
cost.
After you have passed the inspection, you will receive two copies
of the vehicle safety inspection: one to be filed with your registration
and one to remain in your vehicle.
Leased Vehicle Shipments
Leased vehicles require a written release from the leasing company
to be shipped to Hawaii. If you do not have a written release, the
shipping facility will not accept the vehicle for shipment. After
arrival, you must present a notarized limited power of attorney from
the leasing company, specifically permitting you to register the vehicle
in Hawaii. In addition, you will not be entitled to non-resident military
registration since you are not the legal owner of the vehicle.
Additional Benefits
Temporary Accomodation Auto Policy (TAAP)
TAAP is an exclusive benefit for our active military policyholders.
Our TAAP policy allows our deployed military customers to continue
coverage on their personal automobile while it is garaged at a military
storage facility - free of charge! The policy is suspended during
deployment and reactivated automatically upon their return.
To qualify for a TAAP, the military customer must have an active policy,
be deployed for 1-6 months, and garage the vehicle in a military storage
facility. Call AIG Hawaii at 544-3920 for further details.
